Thermal Direct is a chemically treated, heat sensitive media which blackens when it passes under a thermal print-head. You do not need a ribbon to print on direct thermal labels.  As images/text printed on direct thermal labels may fade over time, they are not recommended when the printed image needs to be readable or identifiable for long or lifetime identification applications i.e. over 6-12months.
We primarily use "Coated Thermal Direct" media, which allows you to print labels which have greater image stability and resistance to water, plasticizers and oil than labels made with "uncoated" media. Coated thermal direct labels are also less abrasive on your thermal print head than "uncoated" labels.
